Melissa passed away from complications after a stem cell transplant, necessitated by Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome.
Her mother Sherry created a Facebook page (Swab4Melissa SDS Cancer Awareness) in her memory to advocate for various cancer awareness campaigns and to spread positivity through their #WeChoseJoyTogether campaign, which includes a balloon initiative inviting anyone in the community to bring smiley face Mylar balloons to their local children's hospital.
Sherry shared her story in the context of grief through a beautiful video for the Stories of Hope series by the New Hope Grief Support Community.
